Viraj Khanna presented a new body of work at Selfridges, London, alongside AK|OK’s Resort 2027 collection by Anamika Khanna. Marking the first presentation of his work in London, the installation brought Khanna’s textile-based practice into a retail and cultural setting known for its intersections between fashion, art, and contemporary culture.
The works extended Khanna’s ongoing engagement with embroidery, threadwork, and the visual language of social media. Drawing on images of aspiration, perfection, and carefully constructed moments of everyday life, Khanna transforms digitally circulated imagery into richly textured textile works. Often recreating images from his own Instagram account, his compositions examine the ways people construct and perform versions of themselves through images, particularly within the culture of social media.
Rooted in traditional embroidery practices, the works combine ari embroidery, zardozi, beadwork, pearl work, and three-dimensional threadwork. Their intricate surfaces are produced through collaboration with artisans and craftspeople in West Bengal, bringing together the histories of textile labour and craft with the highly mediated visual culture of the digital world.
Presented alongside AK|OK’s Resort 2027 collection, the Selfridges installation brought these two strands of Khanna’s practice together: his grounding in fashion and textile traditions and his ongoing investigation of aspiration, perception, and visibility in contemporary culture. The London presentation marked a new context for Khanna’s work while extending his exploration of the space between art, fashion, and popular imagery.
